Really nice campsite all round, will be returning
Erin Bolding stayed May 2025.  5*
This is a really lovely campsite, genuinely couldn’t fault it. Owner was easy to get hold of and super helpful when we arrived, campsite was in great condition, toilets/showers etc were absolutely sparkling! Super quiet, peaceful. Lovely location close enough to things while still being out the way.
We will be coming back!!

Our favourite Salcombe site

Tranquil and a Perfect Location for walking

Higher Rew is a small campsite run by helpful and friendly staff. I was loaned a hook-up cable free of charge as I forgot my own. The lady we saw upon arrival immediately offered us a better pitch than the one allocated as it was available on the day. The site is well maintained and has great countryside views. If you are close to a water tap you can even 'hose up'. Most pitches are level, although the site is tiered. Take heed of the last 2 miles route advice from Malborough, as sat nav will take you down a lane which even an Eriba Puck would struggle to negotiate! Use the road adjacent to the big church in Malborough(look for the spire), it is still single lane but there are passing places.
South Sands is a 25 minute walk, but bear in mind its very hilly, especially on the way back. We walked into Salcombe via South and North Beaches, this takes around 1hour 10 mins, and is around 2.5 Miles. We did this round trip every day, and the view are stunning along the way.

👍

Well located for coastal path

A sloping east facing site we'll located for access to the coast path.Toilets and showers very clean, but showers only run for about two minutes of the three paid for and then not very strong. For walkers a great location but 30 mins walk to nearest bus stop.

Great location, good facilities
Stephen Bayley stayed Sep 2024. 5*
Good options for walking from the site. Coastal paths and ideal for dogs. The site is run well with the owners living in a property on site, late in the season the small shop was closed you have to call if you want anything. We used the games room with a pool table, table tennis and skittle alley. A walk to south sands and the ferry to Salcombe is a good day out.

Always excellent!

Love this site which is why we are regulars, love the location, access to beautiful walking and the surrounding area. All of the Squire family are very friendly and helpful, look forward to next year.

Great to be back!

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Higher Rew again. Easy booking and friendly/helpful staff. We had a flat pitch on the main site for our air tent overlooking the valley and Malborough. Excellent facilities all round especially the hot showers! Higher Rew is perfectly placed so you can leave your car and walk in all directions to lovely places including coastal paths to Salcombe and Hope Cove. In between are South Sands and North Sands beaches. The ferry from South Sands to Salcombe is an enjoyable alternative. South Milton Sands is a great beach with its beach shack serving great food and drinks. Using the car you can get to some of the major resorts/towns in the area e.g. Kingsbridge, Dartmouth (steam train a must), Totnes, Paignton, Brixham. There’s never enough time to do them all so you have to keep coming back! We highly recommend this site.

Peaceful spot that is a good base for exploring this part of Devon
Liz Hesnan stayed Aug 2024.  4*
Lovely peaceful Campsite… Some of the pitches are a bit unlevel, but if you have blocks that’s not a problem. Site has a Great Dog Walking area
lots to see and do within an easy driving distance.
Access lanes to the site have reasonably sized passing areas, a lot better than some of the lanes in the area 🤣 But we found the locals drove sensibly so didn’t have any problems

Great view

First came here with our children more than 30 years ago and kept going back. This is the 2nd year with our grandson and we still love it. The Squire family always make us welcome. The facilites are always clean, the site is always well maintained. What more could you ask for?

Brilliant campsite, especially for hikers
Madeleine Taylor stayed Aug 2024   5*
Great staff - so welcoming and helpful. Easy check-in, well stocked shop, well looked after pitches with great view across the valley. Facilities were spotless and plenty of sinks, showed loos etc and a laundry. Play space for kids and all within easy distance from pitches. Charging plugs too! Great for backpackers and families especially. Bit of a hike uphill for hikers off the South West Coast path, but worth it for the facilities, welcome and price. Couldn’t t recommend this campsite more!

Beautiful location, excellent facilities, well maintained site.

Disappointed
Mark Reid stayed Aug 2024. 3*
In general we had a good stay at the campsite, however, the continuous movement of vehicles on and off the site including driving to the facilities block between 2300 and 0300 was disappointing. I appreciate that you cannot control all people but on one night there were inconsiderate people that were very noisy into the small hours. I would say they were drunk and walking through the site screaming and laughing without anyone from the site staff challenging them. The drunken behaviour was out of order to others on the site.
*Reply from Higher Rew*
I am so sorry that you experienced noise after 11pm, we do operate a policy whereby this should be kept to a minimum. I did not receive any other complaints on the bank holiday weekend but appreciate your pitch was close to the facilities. Perhaps if you wish to visit us again we could ensure you are a little further away from this area.  Best wishes from Higher Rew.

Excellent site!
Sarah Fletcher stayed Aug 2024. 5*
We were met on arrival by a very friendly lady who told us all we needed to know about the site, facilities and local area. We found the facilities to be great, the spacious flat pitches with fantastic views were perfect, the play barns kept our children (8 & 2 years) very happy on the rainy days! Excellent space for exercising dogs off lead. Perfect location for exploring Salcombe & nearby beautiful beaches, coves and villages. We will be returning.ck here to edit.

This a great site run by very good people. Nothing is too much trouble for them!
Very good facilities and a great play area for children.
The only downside for me as a caravan puller is that the approaching roads are narrow lanes and can be somewhat hairy!
This is not the fault of the site though and I would still thoroughly recommend it!!

We got the impression, that the site is run professionally with competence and kindness. One Night difficult people were told to leave the campsite. That was necessary and done with courage and gives other ("normal") people security and the chance of a refreshing holiday.
Lawn - excellent
Showers - the way you want and need it on a campsite

Lovely campsite. Access I bit tricky. Walked to great beach. Would like the addition of a mop for showers to remove grass and hair. These are provided at other sites we have visited

Very good site but access is problematic
Jim Borrows stayed Jul 2024.  4*
The site is very well equipped and maintained. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
The main drawback is getting to and from the site with a caravan as the road from Malborough is so narrow. It was so stressful - particularly leaving the site when we met a tractor which refused to reverse - that we would look for somewhere else next time. I’d be happy to recommend the place to anyone not towing or driving a large motor home.

Great location and setting
Samantha Archer stayed Jul 2024. 4*
Very helpful and accommodating staff, access to the site is via 1.5miles of one track lane. Facilities are clean and the site is very well kept. The showers during a very hot week were too warm and would benefit from a couple of rubber brushes to allow removal of the grass after use. A reminder to respect people’s pitches would be helpful as several people seemed to walk through and across pitches. Excellent location with easy access to beaches and walks direct from the site. Overall would recommend and will return. Thanks

We loved the relaxed atmosphere and flexibility offered at this site. The lady who met us was very helpful and accommodating of our needs which involved arriving earlier than advertised times because of a wedding we were attending. We could pick our own spot in the field and orientate our campervan and tent to enjoy the view, which added to the experience enormously. I highly recommend this lovely, quiet, relaxed site.

We had fab weather Which always helps, the Facilities were first class And the brilliant large covered Play area was a lifesaver, especially at 6 o’clock in the morning for a couple of hours!! loads of space on the site, Fantastic views and very friendly owners. Walking distance of beaches, A boat around to Salcombe And the ability to walk / swim back. Four excellent places to stay nearby for those who don’t like camping - with most delicious menus. We were a group aged 1 to 81- And everyone was happy (i think!)

A lovely place to stay.

Our family stayed in the Bungalow field beside our friends who also had a gazebo, so we were nicely set up with some
shelter from the sun. We had a fabulous 3 night stay with sunshine all the way. There is a lovely view down the valley to the sea. The ground is slightly sloping where the tents are pitched, so you have to get on with sliding fractionally forwards as you sleep. I would prefer a flat pitch but higher Rew is elevated and it's location fully makes up for any discomfort. The showers, toilets, washing facilities, games rooms for the kids are all great. The shop could be better stocked with the essentials including bottled water. We greatly enjoyed exploring the local area, where there is so much to do and see. We will be back!

Great open clean space with friendly lady to great us

Really enjoyed staying here, we stopped two nights and travelled about …
We were in the middle pitch which was a little windy but we would change a spot next time.
Great views , a little shop, very scenic views .
The showers weren’t the hotties but did the job .
All round perfect base to stop and go an explore !
Thank you

Friendly, clean and homely, we love staying at Higher Rew

With so many beautiful walks from site no need to use your car. You can even walk then catch a ferry into Salcombe saving the hassle and expense of parking. The site has everything. Hot showers, washing machine/dryer, iron etc. pitches can be slightly sloping but that is my only negative and doesn’t put me off staying. Our next trip can’t come soon enough.

A gem of a place.

The campsite is lovely and quiet and tucked away. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. There is so much to do in the area. There is the stunning Salcombe estuary, to many beautiful beaches to mention and great restaurants and bars. Southsands deserves a special mention.

We absolutely loved this site, helped by the lovely weather. Our pitch was perfect and the whole site and facilities immaculate.
We really liked the outdoor showers!
Very friendly staff.
Beautiful area, though very hilly and the lanes are very narrow. We walked everywhere, lots of footpaths, including one from the site. Nearest beach (South beach)@ 25 mins walk, then you can catch the cute tractor and boat to Salcombe or walk (another 20 mins).Worth bringing supplies with you as not many nearby shops.
Will definitely be back!

A great location for visiting the Salcombe area
Sue Maunder stayed Jul 2024    4*
What a friendly reception we received! Sue was so keen to help us settle within the site (offering a few options for pitches) and within the local area - she was very knowledgeable and offered many suggestions for walks and cycles locally. The facilities were well planned, laid out, cleaned and maintained - we wondered whether a 3 minute shower was long enough but it was no problem!
Access roads were a bit narrow for our motorhome, fine as long as you didn't meet something large coming towards you in the very narrow sections! Other larger motorhomes were on site. We were not able to attempt driving along the extremely narrow-looking lanes towards Hope Cove / South Milton Sands due to time constraints and the rain! We might have cycled these lanes first to assess the width and possible passing places.
The site is on a considerable slope which has been terraced to an extent but, even using our wedges, we were a long way from level! Without this issue it would be 5 stars.

Great location and a beautiful view

We have been coming to Higher Rew occasionally for over twenty years. The location and views are excellent, we like it the way it is and that it has changed very little over the years.
The owners are always very friendly and the facilities are clean and well looked after.

Higher Rew is a lovely site. The indoor play barn is excellent for children. The showers are 20p for 3 minutes, I didn't see this advertised beforehand on the website. It's a great location, close to Salcombe (5 minutes or so)
Lovely welcome by the owner on arrival, the lady brought us homemade chocolate muffins around a couple of pitches.
Would stay again, and would recommend to anyone!

We chose this site as being near to Salcombe and as regular walkers were able to walk into Salcombe & back as well as to Hope Cove. All the staff were friendly and helpful. A small shop was adequate for our needs but it is not too far to Kingsbridge where there is a Tesco & Morrisons. There is a lot to see in the local area and the site is well positioned for South Devon & Plymouth is also within easy reach. the coast path is also easily reached along with both South Sands & North Sands Milton Sands Burgh Island, Kingsbridge, Dartmouth & Totnes. Showers cost 20p for 3 minutes although I preferred to put 40p in and go the whole hog. Temperature was ok and did get warmer as the sun got hotter(I believe it is solar powered). Toilets were cleaned regularly. We also used the washing machine and kept our ice packs in the freezer. We even made Ice cubes for our GnT's. Overall it is a nice clean site, good location & friendly staff. I would be happy to recommend.

Lovely welcome from owner. Fabulous site, far reaching views, everything exceptionally clean and very well equipped - for example irons and ironing boards available for guests. Would highly recommend site.

A lovely location above a secluded valley within half an hour's walk to South Sands Salcombe. Also a good starting point for walking beautiful sections of the coast path. Nice personal welcome to the site from the owner with a choice of pitches (we did go outside school holidays). Many pitches are level. Useful shop on site for essentials with a good range of information. Spotless facilities although showers are coin operated. There's also good wi fi free of charge.
We plan to return to do some more walking very soon.

Skylarks and swifts on group sea kayaking holiday
Richard Perkins stayed May 2024     5*
What I liked most about camping at Higher Rew were the Skylarks trilling in the morning over the reservior overflow field and swifts. I was camped well up the field where it is flatter and the views are good. It is a 5 minute walk from there to the toilets. I had my own chemical toilet with my tent. There are level pitches at the top and the bottom of the overflow field, but the pitches in the middle are sloping.
It can be windy and cold up there even in late May. I needed warm thermal sleepwear, a thermal sleeping bag liner and a sleeping bag underneath as well as my regular sleeping bag to stay warm on the first night when it was 9C or so.
The overflow field was great for our large group of sea kayakers and the location is fantastic for reaching Inner Hope Cove and Salcombe North Sands within just a few minutes, both of which are excellent kayak launch points, with access to great coasts.

We have stayed here quite a few times now of recent years - both tenting and now with the camper. Always good experiences. Everyone is helpful and the quality of the facilities great. Only downsides would be paying for showers (I understand why) and the number of permanent pitches seems to have increased - it detracts from the feeling of camping 'wild' in a field (as much as this is possible in a camp site). But would always recommend.

A very nice quiet area of Salcombe. There are plenty of beaches in Salcombe and some lovely pubs and cafes.
South Sands beach is walkable from Highrt Rew Camping ground, although you do need to be prepared for the walk back (bit of a hill). Staff were friendly (if you actually see any, which isn't a problem).
Although the 20p charge for a 3 minute shower is bit weird, and we would of thought just adding extra to the pitch price would be a better way if dealing with that issue. We paid £56 for our 2 night stay, so why not just round it up to £60 and take away the need for 20p pieces to have a shower.

Nice tidy site reasonable facilities. A very narrow lane for last 400 yards to the site which some people may want to check out before they book. We managed ok because my husband drives an arctic for a living but someone less confident may find it a bit of a squeeze especially if you meet a caravan or camper coming the other way. lovely walks out on the cliffs to Salcombe, East Soar and Hope Cove.

The site is well placed and is overall a good site. My only gripe is the 20p for a 3 minute shower that takes a minute for any hot water to come through. The water is best described as warm and not very warming after a day out walking the local countryside.

Janine Scott stayed Oct 2023   3*
We booked Higher Rew for a break towards the end of the season. The last leg of the journey is tight down the narrow lanes of Devon so be prepared. The site is sloped and even on the top of our chocks we were still not level, the site has lovely views across the countryside and there is a lovely walk out the back of the site to the coastal path. It is a good 45 min walk in to Salcombe and is very hilly in parts. I have given a 3 star review due to the facilities. The shower block , dish washing facilities and laundry are all in the same communal area, a little uncomfortable coming out of the shower cubicles directly on to people washing dishes. The showers are coin operated and very tight, you cannot alter the temperature of the water. The toilets weren’t cleaned as regularly as advertised. The site is all grass and so there was lots of grass in the toilet block. The owner was very friendly but we didn’t see the shop open at all although they did say they would open it at anytime.

Flexibility was appreciated when booking for other friends and our host was readily available for dealing with all our queries. Pitch sizes were generous, facilities fine. A lovely scenic location, approx 2 miles from Salcombe - a beautiful spot in itself.
A lovely place for hill walks.
About 2 miles from nearest village. Personally I prefer closer civilisation, but some takeaways are happy to deliver to the campsite.

Lovely location

Stayed for one night in my camper as had stayed previously and remembered it being a lovely site. Nice big grassy pitches, plenty of space (Mid Sept) but more seasonal caravans than last time I visited. Loos and showers all good and clean (20p needed for shower). Lots of local info and maps in washing up area. Didn’t see staff but they were friendly when I called to confirm arrival time.

Lovely position
Sophia Pearce stayed Sep 2023.  4*
Lovely situation, feels very open and green. Good place to stay with a dog. Well thought out with games and play area under cover, clean toilets. Only problem was the access road was pretty narrow which seemed normal for small roads in that area but if you're not used to roads like that can be a shock and would put me off returning. Only other point is nothing would ever induce me to put money in a meter for a hot shower on a camp site. I would rather pay a higher rate for a stay than have to put 20 p in a meter situated outside the shower cubicle. Hot showers should be included in the price.

Great facilities and views

Always find the site well maintained, clean and tidy and as we were post school holidays, the site wasn't too busy and nice and quiet. Also the location is well positioned for a loop to saw mill cove around the coast to South sands and back, or a short drive down to North or south sands to launch our kayak.

Fantastic views and amenities.

August Bank Holiday last minute booking accommodated, plenty of space in the overflow fields!
Stuart Fuller stayed Aug 2023.   5*
We made a last minute booking for 2 nights of the bank holiday weekend as we'd been watching the weather avidly. The area is extremely popular and we spent hours ringing around campsites. Eventually we found Higher Rew! There is the main campsite with hardstandings/serviced pitches and grass pitches but this was full. There are two overflow fields: Bungalow field which is close to the farm and facilities and Reservoir field which is a short walk (uphill) with abundant space. Both have some flat space but quite a lot of sloping areas but we were in a van with chocks so not an issue.
The facilities were very well maintained and regularly cleaned. There is a small play area in a barn which is suitable for younger kids. Also an indoor barn area with a table tennis table and benches with WiFi which is where the older kids are drawn! The washing up facilities were spacious and clean.
We did a nice walk to the National Trust gardens and South Sands (kids aged 7 and 9).
I recommend this site.

Beautiful Site

Higher Rew is a bit of Heaven from Devon Campsite! If you, like our children and grandchildren, bring the Grandparents with pizza oven, event shelter, waffle iron and fire pit as well as beverage, , - you will have the best holiday - in wonderful settings, cleanest camp site we have been to - delightful hosts ( The Squire family ) - and close to lovely beaches and of course beautiful Salcombe. We also have to mention that the cakes and preserves from Old Walls down the road are as the title of this review. Thank you again for having us - please keep this a secret as we would like to have it all on our own next summer. Love from Ma and Pop (who came for a week and stayed for two)
p.s. The Winking Prawn in North Sands is a must

We had a wonderful week at Higher Rew, the pitch wasn’t the one I’d originally booked but we got a big pitch against the hedge which was very sunny. There was always showers vacant even though it was the school holidays. We had some lovely walks from the site to Soar Mill cove, South Sands and Salcomeb.

Steve Wilson stayed Aug 2023.  5*
Higher Rew is a perfect base for your fun in the sun, the perfect venue for a good old fashioned family holiday. the site is very clean, has all the facilities you need but non of the commercial nonsense that so many sites offer these days. There are a couple of pop up food kitchens on 2 days a week which offer good food at a reasonable price. The area is rich in coastal walks, and local beaches. South sands is just a mile down the road where you can catch the ferry into salcombe. The roads are very narrow around the camp site so maybe not for you if you like the fast paced life, but if peace and tranquility is your thing you’ll love it.

We’ve been coming to Higher Rew for many years, we absolutely love it. Family and dog friendly. Excellent for the kids to ride their bikes. Very friendly and helpful owners, with a small shop on site and various take away concessions that come some evenings. Level pitches. Good shower and toilet facilities and a washing machine and dryer.
Easy to get to Salcombe and surrounding areas and lots of local walks.
A really nice quiet site and very safe.

The facilities are good cleaned on a regular basis showers, washing machines & dryer ,wash up for plates & pans etc & play areas for children & the older ones.
There are fantastic views from all areas especially the reservoir overflow field which I mostly stay in.
You are near south sands where you have a nice beach with a ferry to Salcombe as well as a water sports shop & cafe
The prices are reasonable for the area

We've been visiting Higher Rew ever since my wife and girls came across the site whilst travelling around the area in our old VW Campervan in 2014. The facilities are great for the basic camper right up to the experienced caravanner and the site is in a great position for walks along the coast or inland. We always look forward to our visits and Sue and Sara always give us a warm welcome.

Didn’t sleep all night, the bungalow field is on a huge slope which meant that the wind all night really affected the tent, I know they cannot control the wind but really this should not be used as a camping field. It wasn’t even severe weather as it was a sunny hot day! Booked for 2 nights but left after the first night in the morning. The main field didn’t look like it would be as bad for wind.
Toilets dirty and run down, cobwebs everywhere
No shop on supplies on site so when we forgot something we had to get back in the car and drive out to the village
**reply from Higher Rew**
Thanks for your submitting your review to Higher Rew.  I am sorry that you didn’t like the Bungalow Field. This is a very popular area and we have many clients that specifically ask for this field every year as it has a view to the sea. As you said, the weather and wind conditions are out of our control unfortunately.  i am very surprised that you felt that the facilities were not clean. You can see from previous reviews that this is the one area of the park that most people compliment us on.  We have three cleaners that work once in the morning and in the afternoon.  One of our cleaners actually stays on site so she is able to  check on them.
With regard to the shop. We try to stock this with essentials and what we feel people would need during their stay taking into account sell by dates etc, the co-operative garage is of course just under 2 miles which many people visit or they may arrange for Tesco/Morrisons to deliver to the site.
I am sorry that you didn’t enjoy your stay, perhaps if you did want to visit us in the future we could chat about a specific pitch that you may prefer.

Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Shop on site. Clean showers, toilet block and a laundry area. Free use of the iron. 20p per shower so take some coins or you can brave an outside shower.
Area for younger children and teenagers which was well used.
A pizza and taco takeaway service visit once a week.
Plenty of room per pitch.

Lovely views from our pitch but access onto it was difficult
Tracey Bayliss stayed Jul 2023.  3*
We liked the site but access to it was difficult down narrow lanes and would put us off travelling to this site again. Our caravan was damaged as we were travelling back down these lanes. We also found it difficult to pitch. I do think more could be done with the playground and games areas to make the site more appealing for children. The tennis court is a good feature - pity we couldn’t make more use of it due to the weather! Staff were very helpful, approachable and friendly.

Super, family friendly campsite in a gorgeous setting!

Really happy with everything. Lovely steep 15 minute walk down to the beach, early morning sea swims a must for the hardy at South Sands, with hot drinks from the cafe to warm up afterwards. Long, pleasant walk to Salcombe or you can take the quaint sea ferry from South Sands. So much to do: dramatic cliff top walks around East Soar and Bolt Head, beautiful gardens at Overbecks. The site is quite remote so transport is necessary. It is so quiet and peaceful and the facilities are great.

Everything is on site and the site caters for everyone. It is a little way out of Salcombe however there is a lovely walk down to South Sands to catch a ferry into town.
The bus stop is a long uphill walk up to Marlborough, a village nearby.
Staff at the site are very helpful and knowledgeable.
The site itself is a little expensive as we had a small van so only really needed electric and the pitch. You also had to pay extra for a 3 minute shower which should be included.

Still brilliant!

My first time at Higher Rew. Arrived by bicycle quite late with my tent on the back. The well stocked campsite shop was still open and provided all that I needed and a warm welcome. Pitched my tent on one of the enormous pitches of the well maintained top field. The showers were spotless and lots of hot water. The facilities were very clean and tidy. Stayed two nights. Would definitely recommend. Very inexpensive as an extra bonus.

Our stay at Higher Rew was great from start to finish. The owners and staff were really lovely and very accommodating. The facilities were kept clean and tidy, and were enough toilets and showers, so no queues. The walks from the site were great with the coastal paths only a short distance away. The walk into Salcombe is about 35 minutes, but it is a big uphill climb back to the site. Salcombe and South Sands are lovely, as is the walk to Soar Mill Cove and Hope Cove is definitely worth a visit. The only down side is that the lanes in the area are very narrow, which could prove difficult for the larger vehicles. Thank you to all at Higher Rew, including the seasonal owners, who were really helpful with tips and advice.

First visit- recommended
Joanne Oliver stayed Jun 2023.   4*
Campsite is down the narrow winding lanes so this is something to be mindful of, however we managed it in a large motorhome without much of a problem. Campsite facilities are 100% even irons and hairdryer for use, and the outside showers are a must to try (there are inside ones too)
Lots of small villages to visit and would certainly say Hope cove is worth a visit. A 25 minute walk to South sands beach where you can get a ferry to Salcombe.
Only negative is it’s very hilly and taxis are few and far between so be prepared to walk.
Would certainly stay again

Well kept campsite with a lovely view. The facilities were all clean but the showers I felt needed an updating and at times smelt a bit drainy.
Lovely spot but because we like to go out in an evening for a drink we would prefer a campsite nearer a pub or bus route.
The long stay caravan owners were not at all friendly to us visiting campers we got the impression they like it to them selves.
I would definately recommend to people that like a pretty campsite .

Great site. Nice amenities. Lovely and friendly. Have been many times in past. Disappointed on this visit re the amount of dogs running free off the lead despite notice to keep dogs on lead. We are respectful dog owners of very quiet well behaved dogs but keep them on a lead. We were surrounded by a number of dogs. 2 pitches with dogs on lead but four dogs on neighbouring pitch all off lead. One opposite off lead and two more on a pitch two up roaming most of the site.
**Higher Rew reply**. we have discussed this over the phone and I have confirmed that the matter is being looked into and our priority is that dogs are kept on a lead on the main park**

Higher Rew is a well appointed site with views out to the sea if you are lucky enough to get one of the pitches near the showers and toilets.
My only reservation was the general area which is lovely for a day or two but lacks the ability to entertain you for a week or so.
The site is great but once you have seen South Sands and travelled on the ferry to Salcombe....what's left???
If you are looking for quiet and relaxing it's a great choice based on our visit in May.

Our little release from the rat race, the perfect camp site with everything you need and nothing you don’t need. Family run, very friendly and helpful, perfectly situated, just a mile from south sands and the ferry to salcombe, or for the more adventurous ideally placed for some of the most breathtaking coastal walks you’ll find in the UK. Not for those with an agenda or with a lack of patience, the narrow roads means a lot of giving way and waiting for the roads to clear, but it also gives you a chance to take in the exceptional scenes.

Lets start with...this is not one of the more fancy CCC sites that we have been BUT that made it all the better, nestled on a high location looking over stunning views towards Salcombe it was great.
The site has everything you need/expect with additional outside showers, a play area for under 11,s logs for BBQ's and a lady who greeted us who could not have been happier to give us all the time we needed to explain the area, what we could access and where to find it.
We had one night which was not long enough, we decided to walk down to the fantastic beech/cove where a water taxi can be got to Solcombe (via a tractor which takes you into the water to meet it), i know if we had gone the other way we could have seen other things and walked to other beauty spots (we will save that for another time)
Beware the drive, its rural to say the least and the lanes to the site are as small as can be but all doable and worth it.
Looking forward to returning asap.

Good site. about a mile walk to South Sands and the ferry into Salcombe (its quite a steep climb to the site itself). We were there in late September and it was nice and quiet, even though it is quite a large site. However, there were several seasonal pitches, and several campers seemed to have multiple dogs, which weren't routinely kept under control. Although the dogs were generally well behaved, one or two did stray into our pitch, and upset or dog. Site was clean and facilities were good, although the site shop was generally shut when we there. Although the Wifi service seemed to be ok, it took several attempts to log into it, as the details given at the shop seemed to be out of date.

This really is Paradise at its very best, the site is family run, it’s clean, it’s tidy and very well maintained. A mixture of grass and hard standing pitches. And with most sites in the South Hams you get all the facilities you need and nothing you don’t need.
The area is breathtaking. It’s a mile walk from the site to south sands. It’s all down hill going but a steep up hill climb coming back. From south sands you could take the ferry into Salcombe, or enjoy a challenging walk over to north sands, maybe some refreshments at the winking prawn before the final 45 minute walk into Salcombe. There you will find an abundance of quality shops, pubs and restaurants. But remember this is Salcombe so no pound shops or amusement arcades.
Public transport is limited, there are taxis but more often than not you will have to wait, and in the summer months parking is very limited. But once you soak up the beautiful views and the decent weather all that falls into insignificance.

We stayed in a van in the bungalow field which offered great views down the valley. The pitch wasn’t particularly flat but the owner was kind enough to offer us some blocks so we could even out the van.

Pat Binns stayed Sep 2022.  4*
We liked the appearance, cleanliness, and view on the site but had a problem with the location unfortunately.
We were told not to follow Satnav and to stay on the main A road to access the site but this was unclear so we had to stop to ask directions. We found the site after these directions but driving a motor home down single tract lanes is not easy, we always try to avoid this. We feel there should have been warnings of this on your website. You tend to think that a caravan site is easily accessible.
On arrival at the site we were told that another email had been sent regarding the directions but I didn’t pick this up as I don’t access my emails while on holiday! We were travelling from other areas of Devon.

Much loved family friendly site.

This is a very good site, with all the facilities required to enjoy a camping stay and very helpful staff....we walked from the site about a mile to South Sands and Sara gave us taxi numbers which we used on our visits to / from Salcome.
Site facilities were clean and tidy with a good number of showers.

Stayed in the top field or reservoir field . Generally you need goid weather to stay here. Large slopes can be difficult to find level ground unless at the very top. Your tent would have a tilt. . Very exposed to wind. Generally people were keeping their dogs on leads. Showers were ok, could do with more cubicles . Not enough if the site was very busy. Toilets clean and tidy. Staff friendly. Top fold should be cheaper. Very small lanes to get to the site with few passing places. Local beaches ok but limited parking.

Upon arrival at Higher Rew a friendly greeting was given and pitch 12 was ready to set up. Just a three night break this time after spending time here earlier this year and last year. This campsite is quiet , extremely clean and set in such a beautiful location. You need a good pair of legs for walking and it's perfect for dogs. A reasonably good shop sells essentials and Marlborough a short ride or a 25 minute walk away if you need more. I will definitely be back a 4th time and it was lovely to see Sara again who is so friendly and busy .
Try Higher Rew , you will not be disapointed.

This is the third time we’ve stayed at Higher Rew, travelling from Hertfordshire. It’s a lovely location with a beautiful walk down to South Sands where there’s a lot to do like paddle boarding, jumping on the ferry to Salcombe or wasting and drinking at Bo’s cafe or the hotel. The stars at night are amazing if the sky is clear. The site facilities are good and nice to see some food vans this time to save on the camp cooking. The 20p showers are a bit of a frustration given no one carries change these days but there’s a decent outside shower if you don’t mind showering in your trunks. Would always come again.

Lovely location and the owner was very friendly and helpful!
Great facilities, always clean and what we needed was all there. Nice little shop on site for essentials and food vans came on certain nights, which was lovely!
The drive in was interesting, all one lane roads and the hills were fun!!!
Only thing I would suggest would be maybe more lights on the walk down to the toilets!
Also only negative was unfortunately the amount of teenagers causing a bit of grief and noone there to speak to about it or enforce the rules.. also people not picking up after their dogs!
Otherwise lovely stay!

Higher Rew is a wonderful campsite to visit on your own or as a couple for a peaceful time in one of the quieter fields, or as a family in the main field where you are nearer the amazingly clean & well planned facilities, young children's play area & indoor play barn.
The owners are lovely and friendly and really care about the site & making sure you are happy with your stay. Three different caterers had evening food vans on site - we enjoyed the high quality pizza & the Asian food, both delicious meals.
The site is totally in the country but only 2 miles from the village or Salcombe, a stroll across the fields to the nearest coast, or a short drive to South Milton sands beach. The parkrun on Saturday morning at Bolberry Down is nearby too. And we love the outdoor showers - hope they are a permanent feature not just for Covid.

Traditional camping with a friendly atmosphere
William Trent stayed Aug 2022.   4*
The site offers all you need, power is easily available if you need, water is located within a few feet of each site on the main field the pitches on the main field are spacious and fairly flat.
The shop is small but has all you need and the Squire family who have always been very welcoming continue to do so.
The washing up area is spacious with indoor and out door adequate showers and the kids area kept 2 12 year old girls happy.
The only down side was a very modern issue and that was the wifi was not set up but they are working on it.
Excellent location for walking, beaches and touring so give it a go and enjoy a none commercial site.
Many thanks for a fantastic stay and love to the family from the Trent's

Fabulous campsite. Very family and dog friendly. Excellent facilities. Very helpful owners. We’ve been coming for years with various family in caravans, camper van and tents. Great location. Highly recommend Higher Rew.

Problem Solved
Stephen Jones stayed Aug 20224
Thank you for sorting out the problem with the adjoining camping plot , I understand that some people stay at your site for long stay work purpose and with respect this would not be a problem if they were not preparing to go to work from 04:30 am and then starting and leaving the site at 05:00 am basically very early! this was exacerbated by the  dogs who left in the caravan with constant barking and yelping from the time the worker left, disturbance that we and other holiday makers experienced and is not acceptable but as indicated this problem was resolved for ourselves as the lady was moved .

Great campsite with stunning views.
We have holidayed in the Salcombe area for 15+ years and had never come across Higher Rew Camping Park previously but so glad we did. Friendly welcome followed by 7 nights of comfortable, peaceful camping.
Watch out for the Pizza van on Friday night's which were so tasty.
You have many great beaches within 15-30 mins but the walk to Soar Mill Cove from the campsite is well worth it.
Will definitely be booking Higher Rew again when we come back to Devon.here to edit.

Colin & Sarah Taylor stayed Aug 20225
This was our first time on this campsite as we wanted to be close to Salcome and this was the nearest we could find. The roads are a bit narrow leading to the site but we managed ok. We were put in the reservoir field which was much quieter and had amazing views.
The showers had 20p meters which at first we were not too happy about but it ensured you didn’t have to wait for a shower as we had to do on other sites where some people stayed in for ages. The showers were very nice as well.
The site was kept very clean and staff were very helpful.
It was an easy walk to the coast path from where you could walk to NT gardens or a lovely cove.
Wasn’t too impressed with the beaches at the bottom of the road as they were very busy but it was the kids holidays.
Would love to come back and explore more of the area as we never had chance to get to Salcome

Starry views amazing
Gillian Strachan stayed Jul 20224
We were slightly dismayed that our pitches were directly behind the toilet block and quite a small pitch with a hill directly outside the tent that made it tricky to sit outside our tent but we just about managed. The check in was smooth and easy and directions to the facilities very straightforward, we were able to pitch immediately as our pitch had been vacated. Overall, a nice site, toilet and shower facilities clean and maintained throughout the day, good laundry facilities, a little noisy late at night as we were near the games barn and had a few teens on the first Saturday night enjoying themselves. The site is up high, so the walk into Salcombe itself is down some very steep hills which obviously have to walked up on the return but fine for the fit ones on our group. Some narrow country lanes with high hedges as you’d expect to find in rural Devon, we don’t tow a van or have a mobile home so can’t comment on the drive but overall, a nice simple clean site, good value for money.

I was recommended this site by a friend who has been visiting for almost 30 years. It is in a beautiful location, with great walks and beaches nearby. The site itself is lovely, good facilities (including a shop) well kept and very clean. The pitches are well looked after and spacious. It is a family run business and they are very friendly and welcoming.
The visiting pizza and burger vans were a bonus!

We recently stayed at Higher Rew for a week. First impressions were very positive. Easy check-in and clean site. The pitch where we were, was a decent size, although there was a bit of an incline behind us, which limited which way our tent could be pitched. The facilities were clean and the little swing park area for our son was a nice touch. He enjoyed it there. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Peaceful, beautifully kept park, nestled in the rolling hills of Devon. Good facilities and friendly hosts. My advice.. dispense with the camp stove and treat yourself to a minute walk along country lanes lined with thatched cottages, footpaths arched by trees and hillside lanes peppered with sea vistas and you’ll find yourself on North Sands by the Winking Prawn, where breakfast is served from 9:30am.. enjoy, while the sea on the little beach sighs.. Breathtaking. You are on holiday after all!

Joanne McGarry stayed Jul 20225
Lovely family run camp site and all members of staff so welcoming and friendly, so much information to pass into each camper of local places to visit , walks , food places to eat , visiting takeout vans twice a week , maps purchased at small price but well worth having .
Set in a small valley that you can just about see the sea ,which is walking distance…. But not flat walking , a few hills but nothing you can handle unless obviously you are restricted with your walking . ideal size too , just everything you need.
Talking to people, who have been coming for years and permanent pitches for caravan owners who come all seasons , they assist with moving caravans with not a problem, there to help without a doubt .
Local beaches , absolutely stunning 😍 south sands , north sands , and salcombe , got to be seen .
So good we extended our stay , we will definitely be back , Thank You for a Wonderful Stay , we came away feeling so relaxed and really feeling like we’d had a holiday xxxx

My family and I have been coming to Higher Rew since I was a baby (over 35 years!). We now have an annual family gathering there each year and we will continue to come for many years to come. Salcombe is one of the most beautiful places in the UK and on a sunny day it's better than going abroad. Higher Rew is run by a brilliant family who work tirelessly to make sure everything is perfect. The shower and toilets are always spotless and there's a shop and play barn for the children. The sign of a good campsite is the fact that many many families come back year after year. See you next year!

We always have the best holidays here.
Facilities are brilliant, clean and easy to use.
There are lovely walks around the campsite and easy to walk to places like South Sands or Soar Mill Cove.
Salcombe is less than a 10 min drive, which is perfect to pop down there for a drink. Also, Bantham beach is only a 20 min drive, narrow roads, but totally worth the drive!
Co-op in Malborough is very handy and the little shop on the campsite is great to grab a few things for breakfast or dinner.
I especially love the food vans that come to the campsite. Highly recommend the pizza van and burger van!
Overall, one of the best campsites in the area. Everyone at Higher Rue are lovely and friendly.

Lovely campsite.  24th May 2022

Beautiful campsite, immaculate facilities. Lovely walks, didn't need to drive anywhere. Would definitely be back.

Quiet, clean with brilliant views.  -24th May 2022

Narrow road to get there, we were fortunate that we didn't meet anyone with a caravan coming from the opposite direction. However all that vanished from our memory on arrival. Great large flat pitches, all with outstanding views, facilities were some of the cleanest I have seen on any site. Would recommend this site to anyone but particularly hikers as paths go in all directions and coast path is not far away.

Novice Caravan Tourer.  28th May 2022

Firstly the access to the site via Marlborough village is straight forward even for a novice provided you follow the Campsite guidance i.e. aim to leave before 11am and arrive after 1pm; cars give way to caravans. Beautiful setting with excellent facilities and a short 40min downhill walk to the beach and access to Salcombe. 😀👍

During the summer half term break my friend and I enjoyed a brilliant caravan break at Higher Rew. The site was beautifully maintained and the staff so helpful. It was wonderful to wake each morning and enjoy the great view from our pitch. My friend is disabled and the staff was so helpful in ensuring she was able to enjoy their site with minimal difficulties. Our children could play freely about the site which was open with lots of space unlike some places we have visited where pitches are so tightly packed together. We loved the local beaches where we spent most of our time. There is little to do to entertain young children on rainy days but fortunately we had lovely sunny weather so it wasn’t an issue.

The only down side was the lane leading to the campsite. It was very narrow and not a place that you would like to meet another caravan or large vehicle going the opposite way.

We have just spent a wonderful few days at Higher Rew. The site is ideally located to visit local places and we were able to walk to both Salcombe and Hope Cove using footpaths from the site. It is also well located for the coast path which is stunning. If you like walking make sure that you purchase one of the local maps from the camp site shop it was brilliant!

Easy access in a car - and I would have driven a camper van to the site without a problem. On the site the pitches were a good size and level and the view was excellent. The facilities are the best we have come across - clean and tidy and enough of everything.
From the site there is a quiet walk into South Sands and Salcombe. It is a hilly walk but then this is Devon.
I would recommend this site to anyone who wants a quiet restful get away. We will certainly be returning very soon.

Everything at the site was exactly as we expected. The upsides were the condition of the site and all amenities; the pitch sizes were fine; the location is great with wonderful views; and the owners were very kind, helpful and friendly. I really liked the outdoor shower after a swim at one of the beautiful local beaches. It's also very well situated for accessing the Coast Path in either direction.

As they mention on their advertising, the site is on a steep hill with only a very narrow lane for access (although hedges will be trimmed imminently). For walkers it's manageable, but not an easy walk anywhere and we elected not to drive off site at all. The pitches weren't totally level, but with ramps/levellers it was absolutely fine.

All in all I would definitely recommend the site and area.

We were greeted on arrival with a friendly welcome and found the facilities excellent. Always very clean and plenty of toilets and showers, no issues with queues like some places. We had two dogs with us and u can exercise your pooches close to the campsite. Higher Rew is excellently placed for lots of fantastic walks in an area of outstanding beauty. Recommend you purchase the little walkers map from the shop, very helpful. You do however, need to be pretty fit if you choose to walk everywhere as the hills are very steep! Alternatively, its a short drive to the beaches and beyond.

Where do I begin! From the onset of our holiday communication was excellent. We arrived and were shown to our pitch and told about the local area.
Our hook up wasn’t long enough, even that wasn’t an issue we were provided with one!
During our stay the family suffered a tragedy, yet each and every day the whole team came out smiling 😊
If we had questions through our stay about the local area they were answered.
There are some pitches which are seasonal and I have to say we were accepted and welcomed by the people also on these pitches. In fact one day Tina and her husband gave us their car parking ticket to use !
We also asked for 2 extra nights and to accommodate this other people due to arrive were moved around to allow us to stay
Rufus and Dorothy’s mum thank you 🙏 you helped us get these nights

My husband and I discovered Rew Farm caravan site over 25 years ago. We were staying on another site at the time and were on a walk in the area. What a wonderful discovery.
The owner was a very nice man who referred us to his wife stating that she was the boss! We have never looked back.
At first we used to tow our caravan 235 miles to Rew for our annual holiday and for the last few years we have been lucky enough to store our caravan with them.
The pitches are really well looked after. The grass is always well mown. The the facilities are second to none. The toilets are immaculate plenty of hot water with soap dispensers, dryers and hand sanitizers.
The showers are the same and at only 20p. are very reasonable. For families in tents it’s ideal with access to washing up sinks, a laundry area with machines to wash and dry clothing ironing boards and irons as well.
It’s a great place to stay. We’d like to keep it a secret in case it gets too well known!

Very clean, great shop, friendly helpful staff, excellent pitch . Have been twice now .

Higher Rew is a lovely site. Very well stocked shop, extremely clean and good facilities, including showers, children play area and washing up area. It’s a great site with friendly campers and staff. Good sized pitches and the pizza and burger vans made for a nice treat. Our second trip, first taking the dog and 3 small children and we will be back year after year now they are old enough to camp.

We were very impressed with High Rew Campsite. The site was peacefully with lovely views.
We found the facilities very clean & the staff were very friendly & helpfully.
We found the location excellent with a lovely walk from the site, past South & North beach to Salcombe.
Wonderful stay & we will be back.  July 2022

Was greeted by a member of staff and showed my pitch, the pitch was a nice size however was slightly sloping. A bit more privacy between pitches would have been nice (some bushes in between). There were some loud campers on site but they did keep quiet between 11pm and 7am. The showers cost 20p per 3 minutes, personally I think showers should be free. The toilets and showers were kept very clean. The campsite is well situated to walk to the coast path which is beautiful and it is about a 45 minute walk into the centre of Salcombe which is quite hilly. The campsite is well situated to see Salcombe and the surrounding area.

Brilliant location.
Facilities excellent.
Lovely staff.
Thanks!

Overall a beautiful site with very helpful owners.

It is a lovely site amongst beautiful Devonshire countryside. People were very friendly and the facilities were very good and very clean. Although we didn't use the children's playroom that would be an advantage to a family.

The main problem we had was that as we decided not to have electric on the site we were placed right up the end of the campsite - a VERY long walk to the toilets etc. The caravans using electric were placed nearer the facilities even though they probably had their own toilets. This would put us off coming again unless we paid more to have electric and therefore be closer to the toilets - especially at night! The only other thing is that you are not in walking distance of a pub.

Reservoir field
Melvyn Chave stayed Jul 2022.   4*
Everything nice and tidy, first class in fact but, there is a huge slope on the reservoir field. We camped right at the top to get level ground which made it too far from the facilities.

Great camp site

One of our happy places and the best campsite in this part of Devon. Sue, Sara and Clare create a relaxed, tranquil environment in a naturally beautiful spot. Everything is calmly organised, clean and hugely welcoming. South Sands just down the hill and the lovely Hope Cove nearby. Glorious.

We visited Higher Rew again after many years of using the campsite and, as great as ever. Spotlessly clean facilities, great tennis court which we used a lot and just brilliant location in the Reservoir Field. Away from the crowds, complete freedom and breathtaking views (and sunsets!).

This was the first time I booked online and I thought the system was efficient. Probably better to get the expense out of the way by paying in advance!
Sara was on the end of a mobile phone and met us to direct us to our pitch- no 67 which was ideal for our VW T6 Campervan in the corner of the site near to the outdoor showers. Sara was very sociable and was very at ease with the new booking system.
We had moved from 2 weeks at www.thecrabpot.co.uk to finish off our annual Salcombe holiday with three nights at Higher Rew.

A gem of a site.We did not want to leave.

We have recently returned from a lovely holiday at Higher Rew Campsite. We initially booked one week in a tent but extended it by a further 3 nights as we enjoyed it so much. The location was perfect.Very accessible to many places. You are not always obliged to drive. We walked to Salcombe one day and caught the ferry to East Portlemouth to reach Gara Rock and back along the coastal path. You can walk to Soar mill Cove very easily the other way and on to Hope Cove if you enjoy walking.
The site was a mix of camper vans and tents and was peaceful at all times. No anti social behaviour whatsoever. The staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful. The shower block and toilets were kept clean at all times and there was never a queue. The facilities are excellent although we did not use them all.A deep freeze for ice packs, washing machine, ironing boards, hair dryer.Separate sinks for washing clothes and dishes, although sadly not everyone adhered to the rules. A better site you couldn't find!

Sixth Visit!

We booked last minute and the staff were very helpful and managed to give us a pitch with electric as requested.
Location is good for walkers like us and no transport was needed to get to the many lovely beaches.
The site was very quiet in the evening which suited us. Facilities were clean and kept tidy.
Will return.

This is a lovely campsite! Perfectly placed for a quiet getaway, with beautiful walks and access to stunning beaches. The facilities are excellent - clean and accessible. The owners are friendly and extremely helpful! The campsite shop sells all the essentials and is reasonable priced.
You can walk to Salcombe where you will find a great variety of ‘dog friendly’ shops, pubs and restaurants and also some quirky bars/cafes with like music. Alternatively, you can walk to South Sands and catch the ferry, whilst catching the beautiful views of the estuary.
The pubs, restaurants and take away places have super options for specific dietary requirements including: vegan, vegetarian and gluten free.
There is a ferry service over to the other side of the estuary, where there are other beautiful walking routes, including a coastal path walk (not for the faint hearted) to Garra Rock Hotel and also the beautiful small coves of East Portlemouth and Sunny Cove. There is an alternative, easier inl

We really enjoyed our stay at Higher Rew. We were in the reservoir field and it was nice and quiet and there was lots of room for our children to play safely.
The facilities were kept really clean and there was everything we needed for a week away. Showers were warm and lovely!
We walked to South Sands on one day from the campsite with a 3yr old and 5yr old, and although tired when we got back it was lovely to not have to take the car. There are other lovely walks in the area and obviously the great beaches on the Salcombe estuary which we all enjoyed.
We love the area and the site and will be back in the future :-)
